Lucky editor Edward Loh from Motortrend was given the chance to test drive a prototype and preproduction 2018 Stinger GT over a frozen lake for a day.

A nondescript lake outside of Arjeplog, Sweden freezes over every year around November and temperatures can fluctuate from 5 to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 15 to minus 40 degrees Celsius). Snowfall averages around 30 mm (about 5 inches) daily and this unnamed lake is where Hyundai, Kia and Mobis engineers from around the world go to test out various systems.

Where better to test antilock brake systems (ABS), traction control systems (TCS), electronic stability control (ESC) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) systems than on thick ice with low friction.

Talking the lake's slalom course and small skidpad was a Stinger GT equipped with 365-horsepower 3.3-liter twin turbo V-6. Of course it was sporting a set of winter shoes and combined with the vehicle's all-wheel drive, he had plenty of traction to maneuver around the cones.

Going through the course at 25 mph is all well and good, but the real fun came about when the Stinger GT's Sport mode was selected. In this mode, 20% of engine torque is sent to the front wheels to make the stinger drive like a rear-wheel-drive car. For the best doughnuts possible, the TCS and ESC systems can be fully shut off.

After a day of icy driving, Loh concluded that the Kia Stinger GT is going to be one fun ride when it goes on sale early 2018.
