A Kia Stinger V8 Could Be In The Works

A top-tier Kia Stinger is already impressive with a 3.3-liter turbo V6 rated at 365hp and 376 lb-ft of torque, but CarAdvice says an even more powerful V8 powered variant could be on its way to the States.

Kevin Hepworth, Kia’s Australia General Manager of Media and Corporate Communications, mentioned the possibility of a V8 could be available to markets outside of Australia. “I believe they’re developing one,” Hepworth said. “There may be a possibility the US could pick it up. We’ve not heard about it [for an Australian launch]. We haven’t entered into discussion for a V8.”

If this is true, we could see Hyundai‘s Tau V8 engine in said high-performance Stinger. Already available in the Genesis G90, G90 and Equus, the 5.0-litre unit is good for 420 hp and 383lb-ft of torque.

According to Graeme Gambold, the Stinger suspension specialist, the chassis is more than ready for a power boost. “Apparently it’s very strong and robust, no problem, can handle more grunt and all those sorts of things, so I don’t think they’ll have any problem winding the wick up” he told Wheels.

So far Kia has refused to confirm or deny speculations, which means a V8 Stinger is a possibility.

If Kia does this then it will be a true poor mans Porsche Panamera and it will go a long way in setting expectations for the brands performance side since right now the Stinger is at the forefront of that image.
I doubt it will happen though, need more confirmation.

The Stinger was already exceeding expectations with a V6 engine and power alone isn't everything it has going for it. What would a V8 Stinger compete with if it does go into production?

I'm sure there are those that are interested in more power, but 365hp is enough for me.

No exact competition but it would just be a more torque filled model compared to the V6. but that's if the V8 even happens. With the right tuning V8 like torque can be had from a V6.

Some say the V8's power output isn't that much greater than V6TT, so your tuning suggestion does have merit and the V6 is lighter than the larger engine. But maybe there will be a turbocharged V8.

Problem with larger engines is the additional weight, that could offset the 50/50 weight ratio.

If it's a small displacement V8, which I don't see why not, that has an aluminum block and other light weight parts then there's shouldn't be an issue. Often these small displacement (around 4.0L) V8's weigh as much as your typical mid-displacement V6. Weight shouldn't be more than another 100LBS or so.

Seems like someone knows a lot about engines But yeah, I think so too. It won't significantly affect your car performances..

Well, I say 50/50 but I don't think it's perfect on the stinger. Weight distribution is more around 52/48 for rear-drive, 53/47 for AWD. So I suppose a small displacement V8 could in fact shift it closer to 50/50.

Seems like we won't be getting any other Stinger variants in the future. Orth Hedrick, Kia Motors America vice president of product planning, spoke with Wards Auto and said Kia won't be creating a Stinger sub-brand or any more variants of the model. So this is pretty much it for the Stinger until Kia decides to update it for a second generation model, but that's years down the Road. This is fine by me because the rear-wheel drive model is pretty much perfect IMO.
